Case Description
Was recommended that I get full mouth debridement then all 4 quadrant scaling & planing. From all that I have read on both procedures, it appears that debridement is done to see what all is needed ... and the scaling/planing is a more extensive form of debridement.
I saw the dentist that recommended these 5 procedures on an emergency basis. His office took bite wings and panoramic films. Removed upper wisdom teeth. (Fully erupted; I am 35 years old and doc commented on their over eruption.) That said; was billed as "Impacted teeth -soft tissue". Asked tech about this .. "uh .. I guess it's due to wisdom teeth having long roots." Went over procedure with her; strictly lifting tooth and removing with forcepts under local procedure... no cutting, surgery, or stitches. Thus, I feel upcoding and crook. There are/are no cysts around roots ... nothing.
Is there anyone out there that feels that debridement is an unnecessary procedure ALONG WITH 4 Quadrant Scaling/Debridement ... and might like a new patient ... of myself and my child? I have no cavities; do not know about child.

When selecting a new doctor, consider the following:
Quality of Explanations: Compare dentist replies. Give preference to well-reasoned, detail-oriented, transparent explanations.
Experience & Qualifications: If a dentist has a practice listing, check their practice description,
special training, typical office procedures and before & after case photographs.
Other Patients' Freedback: If a dentist has reviews, read other patients' reviews. The more
reviews they have, the more likely it is that other patients' feeback is accurate.
Treatment Costs: Dental procedure costs vary from practice to practice and depend on a variety of factors.
Because quality of patient care and treatment results vary from practice to practice most dentists will not "price-match" treatment fees of others.

When we see patients with swollen gums and a heavy build up of calculus and tartar, we will recommend one to three debridements before scaling. Each debridement will remove as much bacteria, tartar and calculus as can be reached above the gum line. As the swollen gums go down, you can reach and remove more, which is why we sometimes do more than one. A scaling and root planing is done with anesthesia so the periodontist can remove bacteria, tartar, calculus and inflamed and necrotic tissue below the gum line. If done carefully, and with correct timing between procedures, you will heal beautifully from your procedures with little discomfort. Scaling without prior debridement, we believe, in certain situations is like doing surgery without cleaning and preping the wound. You will heal slowly and suffer needlessly. Don't be influenced by insurance reimbursement protocols. However, if you need this extensive treatment, you may need to be in the office of an experienced, Board-certified peridontist. You need also to know how you got in this condition, and how to get out and stay out of the trouble it appears you are in. We don't know anything without seeing you, but it is also possible that your dentist has called your tretment correctly.
